I have always loved summer stock for a huge number of reasons, but chief among them is that in one of judy’s lowest periods and most troubled productions, you can see the adoration and respect radiating from her costars. gene kelly unabashedly worships her in every scene they’re in together. I’ve always thought of this movie as a sort of thank-you note and love letter from him to her — ‘when the studios don’t have faith in you, I still do.’
