August 23rd: Why is Gene special to you?
My adoration for Gene is not all that dissimilar to the adoration I have for Judy Garland, quite honestly—it’s hard to put into words. So I’m gonna try.
I’ve already confessed that when I first became familiar with Gene Kelly I didn’t like him. And then I joined Tumblr, where there were several young ladies who showed me the folly of my ways, and pretty soon I started realizing just how talented and (**shudder**) handsome this guy really was.
I haven’t been a fan for very long, but in the short time I’ve managed to see so many of his films and fall head over heels in love with his talent, his craft, and with the man himself.
Seeing Singin’ in the Rain in theatres for the first time in July put things in perspective for me: as I sat in my seat, grinning from ear to ear as my eyes were bedazzled by all the Technicolor in front of me, I glanced around at the people filling the house. Everyone of all ages was smiling, laughing, and applauding as the movie played on, and I was filled with this wonderful realization that after all these years, movies like this are STILL relevant and STILL enjoyed by thousands of people. They wouldn’t still be around and coming out with new restorations and boxed sets and collectibles if they weren’t. Other people love these movies just as much as I do, and realizing that felt so GOOD.
Gene was a part of that, and he loved creating it. So I love him for the joy that he enjoyed giving to the masses, which is still enjoyed to this day. And he (indirectly) introduced me to some really wonderful people. That’s why he’s special to me. :)
